Sara Johnson

My work ranges from loose, coloured drawings executed on site, to watercolour and mixed media paintings produced back in the studio using sketches, photographs and memory. I am inspired by land and seascapes and rather than producing a literal interpretation, I aim to convey the spirit and mood of a place. I am interested in the subtle characteristics of watercolour, the accidental effects achieved by washing out; the marks, textures and edges of the paint. The coast, estuaries, saltmarshes and reed beds of Suffolk and Norfolk, are constant themes in my work.

I trained in textiles at Winchester and Loughborough Colleges of Art between 1972-76 and specialised in weaving. Subsequently I worked as a garden designer and whilst following this career, I became increasingly involved in painting. In 2014, I retired from designing to become a full time painter.
