Rachel Wiles – Open in 2024 – Studio 23
Rachel Wiles is an HWAT artist member, currently working on a series of mixed media collages made from recycled materials and found elements, such as feathers, and seaweed from walks in the Waveney Valley countryside and seascapes along the coast.
I work intuitively and experimentally, not having any fixed or preconceived ideas with the aim purely to evoke emotions felt of a place, using evocative colours and the atmospheric nature of the subject by manipulating the materials.
This collection ‘Of The Land and From The Land’ speaks of the immersive experiences in the landscape and the senses. By using handmade tools from the land, l can build a unique vocabulary of marks specific to the environment from which the found materials came from, giving authenticity to my artwork.
Using a wide range of mixed media, mono prints on abaca tissue and fabrics, repurposed textiles and papers to build the layers, the history of a piece, with marks made in print, inks, paint and charcoal. l also use hand stitching, often slow stitch and some machine stitching to add details and textural marks.
