Our History
The Harleston & Waveney Art Trail (HWAT) was initially formed in 2004 by a small group of professional artists, Noelle Francis, Jane German, Valerie Lindsell, Diana McKenna and David Page. A co-founder of the Art Trail was Caryl Challis of the Harleston Gallery, a significant centre for contemporary arts and crafts in the region, and it was the physical hub of the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail between 2005 – 2011.
HWAT has a constitution (as a collective) and has an elected Chairman, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, a Marketing & Publicity team and a separate Selection Committee.
Art Trail brochures are distributed throughout East Anglia, and our visitor numbers have steadily risen over the years.
Artists’ studios are located roughly within a ten mile radius from Harleston, in many attractive village locations such as Brockdish, Starston, Wortwell, Flixton, Earsham, Mendham, Wingfield, Needham, Denton, Alburgh, Thwaite, Ditchingham, Bungay and Mettingham.
HWAT’s membership comprises around thirty artists, but we invite new artist applications every year. Please go to our contact page to enquire. Some of our members may take a sabbatical or be unable to open in any particular year.
Our Aims
- To construct an Art Trail with a maximum of 35 artist studios, proving more cohesive and intimate than county-wide open studio events.
- To provide a wide variety of fine art and crafts such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, mosaic art, textiles, photography, glassworks.
- To limit the geographic spread to within 8 miles, centred on the market town of Harleston in the Waveney Valley.
- To brand the HWAT community of artists as a professional group, its members selected by selection committee or by invitation.
- To develop the Waveney Valley as a significant cultural area, by contributing to tourism and economic development through the arts & crafts, for the benefit of the local population and visitors, and local art and craft producers.
- To extend the group’s artistic activities beyond an annual art trail.
