Jason Wick

I am a ceramicist, living and working in the Waveney valley, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. The process of working with clay, both physically and technically, holds such an enduring appeal for me as a medium, resonating deeply with my affinity with slow, timeless crafts and the power of highly individual hand-built pieces which place value on the beauty of imperfection and patina, to create meaning and connection in our increasingly fast and fragmented world of mass production and disposable culture.
My practice is heavily informed by my inspirations of Medieval pottery, ancient ceramic traditions and archaeological finds, which hold an endless fascination for me; not just aesthetically, but in the way that history, ritual and narrative, is held in the fabric of objects.
I create decorative pieces, which are steeped in mystery, as well as functional contemporary vessels. My work explores themes such as the impact of the passing of time on materials, Folklore, Myth and Witchcraft as well as the portrayal of lesser visually depicted places, such as liminal spaces and industrial edgelands. I explore these themes, using the development of my own unique glazing techniques which often reference wear, neglect and weathering, to embody the beauty and value of imperfection, and create a mystical weight to the pieces, through the unique tone of the glaze.
I have shown my work in various group shows at The Bell Gallery in Bungay, Original Projects in Great Yarmouth, and the Black Shuck Festival. I am currently creating a body of work for a solo show.
